NBC Revokes AIT, Silverbird, Raypower, Rhythm FM, Others Licences Over N2.6b Debt

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has revoked the Operating licences of Silverbird TV, AIT, Raypower FM, Rhythm FM and some others due to their failure to renew their broadcast licences.

In a statement released by NBC on Friday, August 19, 2022, via their official Twitter page, the stations published are owing the Commission N2.6 billion since 2015.

According to NBC, a list of stations that were owing the commission were published in National Dailies in May 2022, after which two weeks waiver were given to them to clear their debts.

But three months after the publication, some licenses were yet to pay their outstanding debts, in contravention of the National Broadcasting Commission Act CAP N11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, particularly section 10(a) of the third schedule of the Act.

“Therefore, after due consideration, NBC hereby announces the revocation of the licenses of the listed stations and gives them 24 hours to shut down their operations. 

Also,"Our offices nationwide are hereby directed to collaborate with security agencies to ensure immediate compliance.”

According to NBC, the continued operation of the “debtor stations is illegal and constitutes a threat to national security.

"Other broadcast stations yet to renew their licences for the present duration are advised to do so within the next 30 days to avoid sanctions," NBC said.

NBC also called on all IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) and all other broadcast stations that are streaming online to register with the Commission to avoid disconnection.

Adding that broadcasters having a DTT or FM license does not warrant it to stream online, that they are two different licenses.
